What's happening?

The Inyo County/Los Angeles Standing Committee is meeting next week, on Monday 11/10 at 11am, in Los Angeles. This is one of only TWO opportunities we have this year to give public comment to this committee. Let's make it count!

The Standing Committee meeting will be held MONDAY, November 10, at 11am

The Standing Committee consists of decision-makers from both Inyo County and Los Angeles. This is a rare opportunity to speak directly to LA decisionmakers: two LADWP Commissioners and one LA City Council Member sit on this committee.

Let's join with Angelenos to tell LADWP: we need to see change

What can I do? Provide comments!

Give a verbal comment. Attend the meeting and provide verbal comments to show LADWP that folks across Payahuunadü and the Los Angeles area are paying attention. We can show power in numbers.

  • When? Monday, November 10, at 11am

  • Where? LADWP Headquarters, 111 N. Hope St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

HEADS UP: Would you like to carpool from Payahuunadü to Los Angeles?

  • We are setting up a carpool using Friends of the Inyo cars, for anyone who would like to travel down with us from the Eastern Sierra.

  • If you're interested or want to learn more, please email Lauren at lauren@friendsoftheinyo.org or call or text at (310) 746-8030.

Not able to join in person? Attend online! The public can participate in this meeting remotely through Microsoft Teams, including giving verbal comments. These comments also demonstrate our widespread commitment to water protection.

  • Meeting ID: 298 594 499 181 1

  • Passcode: hW378xh9

Not able to make it? Submit a written comment. If the timing of this meeting doesn't work out for you, please submit a written comment. Every comment counts!

  • Email your comment to francesca.joven@ladwp.com.

  • Comments are limited to 250 words. Each one will become part of the public record.

What to say in your comments?

Make your comments personal to you. What motivates you to stand with the tribes of Payahuunadü? Why do you care about LADWP’s conduct in our valley?

Here are some topics that we're planning to focus on:

  • Supporting tribal water rights negotiations: Owens Valley tribes are seeking a federal negotiations team to settle their outstanding water rights. For this to happen, Los Angeles decision-makers must commit SOON to good-faith negotiations. We urge Los Angeles to address their legacy of harm by finally settling these water rights in a just way.

  • Returning to the goals of Long Term Water Agreement: The goal of the Long Term Water Agreement is to avoid significant impacts on groundwater-dependent vegetation in Payahuunadü. Despite this protection, vegetation has been devastated due to lack of water. LADWP must reduce water extraction to allow our ecosystems to recover.

  • Confronting noxious weeds: Invasive noxious weeds, such as Russian thistle (tumbleweed) and perennial pepperweed, have been multiplying within and harming huge swaths of Payahuunadü. LADWP must do more to effectively eradicate these harmful weeds and support the vegetation that it has agreed to protect.

If you have any questions, please email lauren@friendsoftheinyo.org.

Thank you!
